How would you improve this movie?

I'm in an odd position WRT this particular Bond movie. I acknowledge its flaws and its goofiness, but I still enjoy watching it. Part of this is because it's often rather entertainingly goofy, part of it's because somewhere in here is a really great Bond movie fighting to get out.

I remember reading that the original conception of this movie was Bond versus his darker opposite, his evil counterpart. (That necessitated a change in Scaramanga's character from the rather stereotypical American thug in the novel.) That, and the twist of Scaramanga's mistress being the one to send the bullet, were the hooks on which the plot hung. They added in the solex agitator business to flesh it out into a longer spy adventure.

But in the process, they also added in a lot of unnecessary goofiness and mishandled a lot of plot points.

So to bring out the good Bond movie I know is in there, I might have done the following:

Have Christopher Lee play Scaramanga as more menacing. He seemed a bit too likable in some areas. I know Sir Christopher, of all people, could have done it. Play up the "Bond's shadow archetype" business, give it more than lip service. Keep the "suave and debonair" business that shows his similarities to Bond, but also play up some of the ruthless, disturbing aspects of his character.

To that end...show more of the twisted, abusive relationship between Scaramanga and Andrea. All we really see is her toweling him off in the beginning (and looking unhappy), a brief pre-sex scene, the scene with him caressing her with the gun (which seems a little too perfunctory and not as violent as it should have been to make us sympathize with Andrea) and the brief dialogue when she returns to the junk. After that, she's dead. I would give them more dialogue, put an undertone of physical and mental violence in their scenes, maybe have him go so far as to hit her at one point. That would make him look much darker and increase our sympathy for Andrea.

Furthermore...I'd have Andrea survive to the end as the main Bond girl and have Mary Goodnight be the one to get killed halfway through the film. Maybe get killed by Scaramanga because she's in the way (again, to make him look that much more ruthless and make more of a contrast between him and Bond). And I wouldn't reveal Andrea's ploy until nearly the end. I'd have Bond think he was the one trying to seduce HER to the right side and "pump her for information", only to find out SHE was the one in charge of the game all along. (Not that this would have interfered with the "Oh, James" moment at the end.)

I'd have made Mary more likable and competent (much as she was in the book) to give her death more impact. None of that dumb blonde bimbo business. And DEFINITELY cast a different actress.

I'd put more emphasis on Nick Nack's treachery and deviousness (but keep Herve Villechaize). Again, there seemed to be a little too much affection between Nick and Scaramanga in the beginning, for someone who was trying to get his boss killed so he could inherit, and for a boss who KNEW that.

No J.W. Pepper.

And NO. SLIDE. WHISTLE.

So what do you guys think? For those of you who think the movie needed improvement, how would you have improved it?

reply

Nix that idiot JW Pepper guy, ansolutely...

Make it serious in tone, with far less emphasis on humor. What worked in LALD did not need to be repeated, and so lazily repeated as well...

Scaramanga should have the charming side, but to balance it out better with the dark side, as you were definitely alluding to...

Herve was definitely well-cast, and - yeah - the treachery and deviousness wasn't properly written. The bits that show Nick Nack being so were very well played by Herve, so why we couldn't get more of that...

I'd tone down the double entendres; their inclusion only gave fodder for the wretched Brosnan era of the forgettable 1990s.

How would I improve it? By burning all the copies.

More shots of Brit Eckland's beautiful body and less scenes of her speaking. I loved her in the wickerman but her character is such an airhead. I don't hate J.W. pepper like the many others on this board, IMHO there should always be some humor in a bond film. But shorten his screentime and the scenes of the Phillipeans in general,

I dont want to be an a**hole, but I am getting tired of seeing her name spelled Britt Eckland! It really looks and sounds silly for a Swede! Britt Ekland is the name! AND she is really a cool and smart woman for reals! SSee her in the horror film ASYLUM 1972 too!
OK! :)

The one thing the movie was crying out for was the duel between Bond and Scaramanga. Have it go for maybe 10 minutes, with each getting on top at moments, only for the other to survive somehow. What we got was one trick and one shot. Far too simple!

I agree! But as we all can watch the "Behind the scenes.." they explained how the crew and the four actors were literary isolated on that island of Phuket, without even a working phone, and they HAD to shoot to meet the budget and time schedule. When we know all this, we can try to see all that is really cool and imaginative in this film. It wasn´t easy for them to shoot at an exotic location like that. But sure, what a final duel it could have been!

reply

Okay, fair enough. Then my answer to the question "How would you improve the movie?" is to give them the budget and support to do the movie right!

Have Moore whisk the frazzled yet sexy bellydancer, Carmen Satouy, away from her dressing room. I would have loved to see her tagging along with Bond as a love interest. Perhaps she would find her charm ;)

The producers of this film needed to sit down and watch Enter The Dragon one more time (a film which itself was heavily influenced by Dr No and You only Live Twice).

Bond simply needed to fight more people on the island before going into the house of traps in the same way that Bruce Lee does more than just kill one villain before chasing the main guy into the house of mirrors.

The island is so deserted and yet the sets are so elaborate. The film has lots of action, it's true, but when it needs to step up another gear (when Bond goes to the island) it gets so dull. We establish Bonds fighting skills, so i wanna see it applied!! I wanted to see the solar-ray gun accidentally kill the henchman. I want ninjas. Some brilliant opportunities wasted.

And Britt Ekland being the one who comes closest to killing Bond with her ass. Just awful, awful writing, IT STOPS BEING AN ACTION FILM. That's what's up.

I would add about 2 action scenes, Have Scaramanga leave on a regular plane, not a flying car.

"The producers of this film needed to sit down and watch Enter The Dragon".

Isn`t that some kind of silly kung-fu film? In which case these producers may as well have sat down to watch an abstract short by Stan Brakhage, for all the relevance it has to the make-up of a full-blooded Bond flick. Well, almost. Either way, Bond was never strictly an action thing, especially in the sense of people beating each other over the head, and the fake hand-to-hand fighting scenes, when they do occur, are routinely the most boring part of the show.

Are you asking me to describe Enter The Dragon or do you have the internet right in front of you.

...we are clearly from different worlds here. Sounds like you haven't seen it. If you'd seen it you would know what I was referring to. Even I agree that the routine beatings are often the most boring part of the show and IMPORTANTLY this is not the case with Bruce Lee's magnum opus.

Well done for being the worst kind of person.

Not having Bond throw his false nipple away is the only way to improve this movie.
