My theory

I saw Mame when it was released in 1974 and have watched it many times since. I know how many people feel about it, but I find it entertaining, if flawed. However, there is one flaw which has bothered me for 40 years and I have a theory. It’s been said Lucy bankrolled the production so she could star in it. I now believe it wasn’t her money that financed the picture, but Kirby Furlong’s. How else would he have ever gotten the part?!

I recall that one reviewer said that he spends most of his time looking like he has to go to the bathroom.

Kirby could not sing. The "You're My Best Girl" number was downright painful to listen to...on both parts of he and Lucy.
