Why wasn't Lucy's singing dubbed for the film?

Despite giving it the old college try, Lucy's vocal chops simply fail to rise to the occasion. I understand a star name needed to be attached in order for the film to be made, but why not dub her singing voice?

When asked that question in an appearance on Phil Donahue (she was promoting "Mame"), Lucy replied, wryly, "You can't touch this"--meaning it wasn't possible to find a singer to match Lucy's distinctive, hoarse speaking voice. Lisa Kirk was rumored to have been considered as the dubbed voice, but ultimately Warner Bros. decided to go with Lucy.
