Found an amazing forum on obscure art films

http://esotika.yuku.com/

It's the forum of http://esotikafilm.com/

I came across that site whilst researching some truly obscure films, and was pleasantly surprised - actually my jaw dropped - how much info on obscure stuff I've never heard from there was. The site is in limbo, and the forum unused, but I thought maybe - just maybe - this might be a cool place for discussion for some on here to settle over. :)

Also check out www.thelastexit.net They have a whole section dedicated to surrealist cinema.

Here's a better link. http://www.thelastexit.net/cinema/index.html

Hmm, not digging the reviews there, but thanks for the site. :)

If only the guy who did the forum would do a proper job...

Coma--You've got my vote for Jacob's Ladder. Excellent film!

"Jacob's Ladder" is an amazing film. The first time I watched it, I had to turn it off because it disturbed me too much. Fortunately, I've seen it through several times since. It absolutely belongs in the top 250, if not even higher.

As for "Holy Mountain," I must see it soon ...

Warped...Jacob's Ladder is a great film. If you have yet to see The Holy Mountain, yes, you must see it. If you are able to find a copy, that is. Not as easy as you would expect considering how powerful a film it is.
However, considering the fact that you stated you were disturbed by Jacob's Ladder, I must warn you that THM is graphic, brutal and highly disturbing and offensive to some. It's nightmarish and surreal in its imagery. So you must open your mind and allow it to receive the tale as told. Please let me know your impressions/feelings about it after you see it.

Thanks for the details, Andy. I hope I can track down "Holy Mountain" soon. The only film I've seen of Jodorowsky's is "Santa Sangre," which I thought was hypnotic and hallucinogenic. Believe it or not, I still haven't seen "El Topo."

I had trouble watching "Jacob's Ladder" about 20 years ago because I was in a somewhat ... uh ... altered state that I haven't visited for years. So my perceptions were somewhat distorted. But I do like the films of David Lynch, Paul Bartel and Fassbinder, so I think I'm up to the challenge.

I'll let you know when I see "Holy Mountain," and thanks again for your impressions!

Warped, Santa Sangre as I recall, was well conceived and imaginatively displayed with the rich religious/spiritual flavour that Jodorowsky likes to serve us. In my opinion, it is a more..presentable and somewhat more refined dish, if not shocking to the palate, if I may say. Whereas, El Topo and The Holy Mountain are served up like a bloody feast for you to gorge on, and although it may make you choke occasionally, you will know you had partaken of it by the time you have finished it. Unlike the fast food which Hollywood generally produces these days, such films enlighten and inspire us, not merely take up a couple hours of our time.

David Lynch..The original "Dune", is to me an epic masterpiece which is highly underrated by those who can't grasp the meaning of it and is easily one of my favorite films. If Jodorowsky had succeeded in creating his version of Dune, a decade earlier as he had originally intended, the result would certainly have been unimaginable in scope and from what has been said as to the details, staggering in proportion. But, it wasn't to be. Again, Lynch's Dune is a masterpiece.

You do seem to have good taste in film and I sense that you have an exploratory nature, which is an excellent quality to possess. I too have been to that "place" that you visited in the past and I found it to be not an area without danger. If fortunate, we will be allowed in as an honored guest, if not, we can be punished for our arrogance and made to regret the attempt.

Ha, now who would have thought this would turn into a discussion about Jacob's Ladder?? :D

BTW, the site really seems to be dormant. Found the livejournal of the guy who owns it, and he's more busy updating this one with some good reviews of bad films rather than doing his site. :( However, if you guys are into films of that kind, definitely give it a look.

As much as I love Santa Sangre, The Holy Mountain is in another league, it's simply a beast of a film, in the best possible way. Hope you can track it down soon WarpedRecord, and El Topo is a must see too.

Jodorowsky is one hell of an artist.

He left a note. He left a simple little note that said "I've gone out the window."

Wow, Alejandro Jodorowsky and Woody Allen! Having diverse tastes is wonderful, isn't it, ProjectCyclops?

I still haven't seen "The Holy Mountain" or "El Topo," but I hope to soon.
