I was disappointed

My room mate and I are huge fans of movies, and have really watched a ton of movies, and for a while he has been telling me to watch the Jodorowsky films, so I watched El Topo first and absolutely loved the movie, I was really intrigued by it and went into The Holy Mountain with high spirits -

And I was disappointed. I don't know if it is because I liked El Topo so much more of if the film just didn't do it for me. Now don't get me wrong, there were some scenes I did enjoy such as the thief waking in the room with all the plasters. That was good and there were a few others. I think I'm going to watch it again pretty soon and update this.

I actually enjoyed this more as a whole than I did El Topo. I really enjoyed the first half of El Topo, but when it moved to the Western town, I lost almost complete interest (except for the Russian Roulette Chapel).

That being said, I also prefer the opening of this to the last two thirds. It is a better cohesive whole than El Topo, made even more interesting for the obvious inspiration it gave many other films in the decades since.

One thing that I thought was an interesting experiment: the band Black Light Burns released an alternate soundtrack for the first 40 minutes of the film (right until the Master begins to going into the short stories about the others). While my viewing wasn't synched up perfectly, it was still a marked improvement over the original.

Also kinda ruins the album for me as a separate entity, but I definitely recommend it.

Here's a clip that has the album synched:
