I think people focus on the visual stuff, which just happens to be weird (and astonishing) rather than the words, which are interesting enough but which would hardly fill a few pages if written out. I don't think a single intelligible word is spoken until half an hour in when Jodorowsky himself asks "Do you want gold?". These days you can get more potent sex and violence from porn or Saw - most people watch THM past the first ten minutes because it is jaw droppingly beautiful and intriguing. The kids throw rocks at the thief to awaken him - a violent image, sure, but which you need a sense of poetry to understand.
It's no surprise that Jodorowsky later moved int graphic novels. He is primarily a visual artist and the richness and power of his symbolism is unparalleled.
The only quote I can remember (besides the final line) is a funny line from the strongman - "I've conquered the holy mountain horizontally"
