I've watched this high on weed and I watched El Topo high also. Neither are improved, in fact, they are not as good when stoned. Weed really isn't the drug you want to watch this film. Alejandro Jodorowsky was given LSD by a guru before he made The Holy Mountain but this film would probably give a bad trip to whoever watches it after taking a powerful psychedelic.
I recommend you watch The Holy Mountain and El Topo completely sober to experience the full mystical potential these films have. If you want to watch a serious film while high it has to be Natural Born Killers director's cut. It is simply a masterpiece that can only be truly appreciated when baked.
I totally agree with you! This movie is bad trip city! That was the only thing I could think of when I watched it...how I'm so glad I never watched it tripping. I had a hard enough time wrapping my brain around this one sober!
sharePeople with a similar question should listen to this guy's advice. Everyone thinks of this as some kind of drug flick despite it not being so at all. It is a film of deep mysticism told through a great deal of symbolism and it will be most clearly understood sober, allowing the film to function as a drug in itself, as Jodorowsky intended it. Yeah, he ate some acid, but Jodorowsky is one of the most sober people on the planet and though I'm sure this is very entertaining with visual aids there is no "higher" state than complete clarity. The first two times I watched this I had been at the vaporiser but both times I felt like I should really be sober, and for something so densely packed with meaning you will benefit from a clear mind and perhaps meditation beforehand.
The best film ever made, but not one which will be fully grasped by many and which is the most misunderstood by drug users.
I watched this yesterday pretty baked.I highly enjoyed it. =D Some parts were disturbing but that's life. =P Next time, it's shrooms. XD
hahaha yea right
I watched it after passing a bowl with some friends and, although i would like to see it sober, it was a mind-blowing experience while being high. I would suggest viewing it both ways, though. I'm definiately gonna watch it again not high. There are just so many connections to make and seeing it both ways should cover a decent amount of ground.

"So.. I once looked at a hedge. Whats your point?"
Weed isn't gonna give you such a harsh high anyway, so go for it. I pretty much get stoned before watching any movie these days.
My friend saw The Holy Mountain on acid...He almost didn't make it lol
Exactly...what is better than getting a buzz and enjoying some form of media? If anything, I am much more emotionally effected or astonished by something when I am high, it's not like getting drunk and trying to appreciate art...THC DOES NOT affect your thought process, or normal, conscious decisions!
shareWell, alcohol makes you see some things more clearly without actually seeing them through the LSD mindset.
shareTHC affects my ability to communicate coherently with other human beings and articulate my thoughts appropriately.
if you don't like onions, you're not welcome!
I LOVE to watch films when I'm high, but strangely enough I've never watched THE HOLY MOUNTAIN when I was ripped. I've seen it 7-8 times, all straight. It blew my mind when I was sober and continues to after several viewings. I have, however, watched Jodorowsky's FANDO Y LIS high and it was definitely an experience. There's imagery in that movie you will NEVER forget, especially from being under the influence.

I saw El Topo about 4 times completely sober then i found out it was being played at my local indie/arthouse/grindhouse theater (the mayfair in ottawa, ontario canada) and I saw it high on weed, it severely enhanced the experience in my opinion and it made me see most of the things in the film and understand it quite well. I've only seen Holy Mountain once and off a crappy bootleg and that was sober. I would definitely see it high on weed if it ever came to the theater around me (not on acid though, i think that would be a bit much, but hey everyones different).
sharethey played El Topo at Mayfair??!! The best thing i've i've seen them playing is Naked Lunch, Lost Highway,Blue Velvet and a movie I want to see Quest for Fire. Was it a special screening or something?
shareWell i saw it on weed, and it was a really good experience. I got out kinda mellow and quite a thinker after the experience, the movie stayed days in my head.
shareI would not watch any film for the first time under the influence of marijuana. I saw Synecdoche, New York baked out of my mind. I was sitting in the theater, thinking that it was the most incredible thing I had ever seen. 15 minutes after the film ended, I was in a diner, eating pie with my friend, when I realized that I could not remember a single frame of the film that I had just seen.
However, I think it's good to have had an LSD experience prior to seeing The Holy Mountain. I think it could give you insight into what Jodorowsky was trying to do in this film.

LOL this is my first time visiting the IMDb boards in a while and I only just saw your response.
It played back in April 2009. Too bad you missed it, it was pretty awesome. In fact I was probably in the theatre when you were at Blue Velvet and Lost Highway LOL. I bet they'll play it again though. Classic cult movies like this would not get only a single play at the Mayfair I'd imagine.
Probably won't even see this post haha, but whatever.

Oh and to everyone here talking about seeing these movies high; I saw Eraserhead about a year ago (at the Mayfair again) - and it was the first time I watched it high. All I'll say is, not only was it the best movie experience I had while high, but it's the best time I've had being high in general. *beep* awesome.
ye... i was thinking... why?
i mean i really like weed but not for everything i do... for example watching great movies
weed IMHO and in their honest opinion is 4 meditation or closing ur eyes and dealing with ur own *beep* i mean we all got garbage in our mind, we should take out thye garbage one way or another... i prefer sober but if there's weed i use it, but im not looking forward getting high
im not saying 'hey guys quit smoking grass' nor bashing anyone, i mean its the healtiest drug ever! (since alcohol, x, cigarettes, valium, etc) and you should set up ur mind b4 taking it, because is sooo effing powerful.. and yYOU got THAT POWER in ur hands (in this case in ur mind lol)
ok good trip everyone

You can watch it high as a kite. There are scenes that are so wrought with emotions and so intense in their presence and feeling that, naturally, you would be caught in some discomfort for a moment, but the scenes change and transforms so fast. There's a lot of light and love in this film.
shareI never understood why people think getting high makes a better movie experience. For me i'd probably just end up falling asleep and not enjoying the movie as much.
shareI always smoke when watching movies, I saw this stoned and on acid... it's better on acid, but stoned isn't too bad.
shareWeed is almost a completely physical thing to me now, so watching something stoned or sober isn't going to change how I feel about the film as a work of art, just feeling those same things while more relaxed and body buzzed.
Psychedelics are another story entirely. I don't think I'd ever want to watch this on psychedelics, just because watching things on psychedelics in general is an awkward and uncomfortable thing. I want to be out there exploring the real world in three dimensions, not starring at a screen, regardless of what's on the screen. It feels so forced and static, watching a stranger's series of prepared images chronologically for two hours, that I think it's almost a waste of a trip, personally.
