There are some really good things, and some really BAD things about this

The good things:
Robert Redford and Sam Waterson.
The costumes and look of the movie were pretty well-done.
I liked that a lot of the script was so similar to the book.
The casting of some of the more minor background people was done pretty well, they fit in- but this contributed again more to the "look" of the film.

The bad things:
Mia Farrow. The scene with the shirts says it all.
The guy who played Tom. I don't even want to bother looking up his name, he annoyed me so much.
The way that Nick and Gatsby met was so cheesy and tried so hard to add a suspense element that wasn't needed.
I wasn't a fan of the casting of Myrtle, either.

It's weird because when I first watched this, I hated it so much I couldn't finish it. I hated the long, drawn-out scenes between Daisy and Gatsby, blah blah blah. Then I tried watching it again, more as a guilty pleasure. It sucks that the movie got SOME things really right and others completely....not.

Then again, this is one of my favorite books of all time. I don't know that it will ever be really well-adapted into a film.

Sorry, I know your post is a year old but I have to say I agree with much of what you've said. Especially in regards to the costumes, sets, and Redford and Waterston--I thought they were fantastic. I also liked Lois Chiles (Jordan). The three of them really epitomized their characters.

This is also my favorite book ever. :) I wonder how the 2012 movie adaptation will turn out.
