THE EYES OF DR. ECKLEBURG
What is the meaning of that billboard? what's the sense of those eyes which Nick keeps on mentioning?

shareThe deterioration of the sign is also interesting. I definitely see the eyes as representing God in that he sees all the immorality, corruption, etc. However, the deterioration could symbolize the peoples' view of God or maybe their morality. As they continue to indulge in immoral behavior, the sign continues to deteriorate. God is deteriorating within their lives. Even in the film Myrtle makes an interesting comment about the sign just being an advertisement. If the people aren't thinking about their actions being watched, they don't care if what they are doing is right or wrong. The location of the sign is something to ponder as well, but I am not so sure on its meaning.
shareI don't think the sex of the eyes is ever mentioned in the book.
I say that because everyone thinks - and the movie shows that - the sign has the doctor's eyes.
But the original cover of the book has women's eyes. Did Fitzgerald suggest that cover or have anything to do with it?
If the sign has women's eyes on it, it would/could serve as a symbol for all the lust for women that fuels both Gatsby and Tom toward their final confrontation.
