Baz Luhrmann and Gatsby

I was pretty outraged to hear that Baz Luhrmann will potentially be at the helm of the next modern Gatsby project...

Here's where I voice my outrage: http://verbosaurus.com/fiction/the-great-bazby/

Why not Sofia Coppola she seems to understand with is to be rich, beautiful and misunderstood. She also makes visually stunning films with great soundtracks.

I think Luhrmann's gonna "modernize" "The Great Gatsby," just like he did with "Romeo and Juliet." His version of that classic was just too cheesy and made it look like MTV on acid. "Moulin Rouge!" is enough for me to watch, at least it's not some weird adaptation of some beloved classic story and has nice pretty music and scenery to take a look at.

Yes,that flick has been modernized on the set of the 20's. Nothing like the era indeed.

If he modernizes it, the film will be pointless. The whole theme of the story is the excesses and corruption during the 1920's.

I read in newspapers that he thought it was the perfect time to release a new version of the Great Gatsby due to all the greed of the banks recently that lead to the financial crisis we are in. He said a story from the 1920's would be great to show people where they went wrong morally instead of directly critcising them now - implying he will keep the 1920 setting. I just hope he doesnt focus on the superficial beauty of the novel (which he often does if you have seen his movies) and doesnt forget that there is a lot of pain in the undercurrent of the book
