Accuracy of the 20's

Has the 1974 movie held up on its accuracy of the 1920's? Like for example the clothing, cars, and music? I had seen the flick before but,I was little. I know however back in 1922 that the fashions were not that exiting until two or three years later. Hope for replies.

I would say no, it hasn't. It is clearly a 70's film - polyester suites, synthetic fabrics, soap-opera like acting. I struggled with ghis and the 40's version. I really wish I could see the original.

The Ralph Lauren fashions were definitely 1970s flavor with wide lapels etc.

Gatsby's car is a 1928 Rolls Royce (Phantom I Ascot Dual Cowl Sport Phaeton) with a 1925 New York plate, and the two most prominent songs (Charleston, What'll I Do) were from 1923 even though the novel is set in 1922 (apparently the movie was supposed to be set in '25 although I can't recall anything definitively placing it in that year other than the plate).

BTW all Rolls Royce vehicles were right-hand drive until 1923 (RR offered lefties built in their US plant in '23; in '24 all US-built Rolls were LH), so a 100% authentic Gatsby would have required a righty Rolls.

But I guess a real '28 Rolls still beats DiCaprio's car: a fiberglass replica of a 1929 Duesenberg, built in the 1980s and powered by a Ford V8.
