Question about Gatsby

I was a fan of this novel, and read it a number of times many years ago. I never read much on the analysis of the novel though.

I was wondering, were Gatsby's war medals real? You know the one from Montenegro he shows to Nick. Or is it meant to be ambiguous?

They were fake. It just shows how much passion Gatsby had in recovering Daisy's love that he is willing to do anything to the point of acquiring wealth legally or illegally as well as gaining respect and reputation among the people of high standing. That is why he hosted several big parties. Gatsby wanted to become well-known among the rich as well as expecting Daisy to drop by in one of them. As Daisy told Gatsby," Rich women don't marry poor men".

They were real. In the book, Wolfsheim tells Nick that when he first met Gatsby after the war, he was wearing his uniform "all covered with medals."
