You can't repeat the past
"You can't repeat the past", Nick Carraway tells his fellow West Eggite Jay Gatsby, in this, 1974, version of The Great Gadsby & it is proven here: the movie & lead Redford are not up to the standard of the previous (1949) version & Alan Ladd. The scenes with Farrow & Redford are pretty vacuous & aimless, uncomfortable moments like Daisy crying, apparently with joy, on one of Gatsby's "beautiful" silk shirts, whilst The Great G slings his wardrobe all over the room! Of the main characters in The Great Gadsby, Nick the narrator is the one redeemable figure. Whilst Daisy & Jay constantly wallow in dreamy self-indulgence, Nick stands back, quietly observing all of the madness & conspicuous overindulgence around him. Sam Waterston plays Nick with just the right amount of restraint.
