I had forgotten how great Eugene Daniels, as the hot roddin cop lookin for a chase, is! One of the coolest characters ever! He also had the best line when Fonda tries to "powder his face". Daniels had a lot of charisma. Anybody agree?
P.S. The director of this movie can't stop praising this actor on the commentary track.
Totally agree with you on that one. Eugene Daniels nailed that part to a "T."
I have seen him in another movie directed by John Hough, and, of all things, in a driver training film when I was in high school (he probably did it before DMCL).
Wonder whatever happened to the guy, and why he got out of the business?
Eugene, if you're out there reading this, let us know!
That car was in Fact a 1972 Dodge Polara 440.. and is one of the fastest Pursuit cars ever built for police use.. 0-60 in 6.6 and 1/4 mile times of 14.3
The Fords of that era were not as fast 0-60 BUT had higher top end speeds!
Yeah, he sure does rule. He's just incredible in that role. It's an honest shame he didn't more fully pursue an acting career, but at least he left us one truly amazing and indelible character to remember him for playing. "I'm gonna eat your lunch, you long-haired *beep*
I like that. But how can a top end be "unlimited"???? I thought once you hit max speed, you could not go any faster. And no car can keep accelerating forever.
If it could, it'd hit the speed of light and disintegrate.
Theoretically, you're right... the car would reduce to a "singularity" at the speed of light, but I think the mechanic meant that he just didn't know how fast it would go... just fast!!
I always took that line about the unlimited top end to mean that the cop car had more top speed than any other car on the road. At least in the mechanic's mind, that's probably what he meant and the deputy just believed it. I know better, no vehicle could actually have an umlimited top end, as mentioned previously.
ill tell you this.. The 440 pursuit motors ALL had dual air snorkels.. The 383's didnt.. so the car must be a 383ci car and the sounds were obviously dubbed in!
For decades, I wondered what was the line he said -- someone pointed it out to me on this board, and I'd have to agree that it sounds like he says the "twice pipes" line.
As for the air cleaner on the '72 polara, didn't the dual snorkel design change (again) that year from the '70 - '71 design? Also, the orange air cleaner is correct, but the engine block looks blue, which would be a 383. Although, I do beleive that the paint colors on the hi-po engines changed mid-year in '72, so the blue may still be a 440. Entirely too much information... so there you have it...
It's possible it was a 383, but all CHP cars were 440s in '72. The Polaras in DMCL were all CHP pursuit cars. I think it was likely a mid-year 440, but that air cleaner -- who knows!
