DVD is out on June 28, 2005.....but looks to be low-rent version

Not to put a downer on the long, long, long-awaited release of this great film to DVD, but it looks like Anchor Bay is going to 'cheap-out' and go quite lite with the disc. I expect it will be a single disc with a few interviews and a commentary track, but nothing more. What we DESERVE is a two-disc set with the 'lost' TV-add-in scenes and commentary on why they didn't get into the theatrical release, some promo material like lobby card photos and posters, maybe some grainy, choppy but still fascinating 'making of' or 'behind-the-scenes' footage, and a tour of the locations as they look today. Why? Because we had to wait TOO DAMN LONG for this, and we should be rewarded for keeping the faith, not insulted with a 'quickie dump' of a single featureless disc. DeepDiscountDVD is selling it for $11.99...and that's a 'quickie dump' sign if ever I saw one.

Maybe I expect too much. But if 'XXX' can get a director's cut....WTF?!?

I agree. I'm happy they're releasing it at all. If it looks good then I'll be even happier. This and Race With The Devil the same day!

We should feel fortunate Anchor Bay released this film at all: For years, the ownership / rights to "Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry" were in question. The film was RELEASED by 20th Century Fox -- not PRODUCED by them. Big difference. The film was produced by AIP spinoff Academy Pictures Corporation, which went under years ago, and ownership of titles produced by Academy went thru several parties. That's why the only "official" version available was on the old Magnetic Video VHS version released in 1977.

I'll give props to Anchor Bay for securing the rights, and going thru the trouble of doing a new 16:9 widescreen digital transfer from a newly-struck print. I'm thankful the DVD has any extras at all. As for "behind the scenes" footage, etc., that would have been great too, but the original elements for this (if there were any - remember, this was a low budget film, after all) are probably long-since gone, and (once again) subject to rights. Being in "the business," I can tell you that you can't just put up pictures, old film, etc. on a DVD without making sure the people who own / shot the footage are compensated and release the footage for use. I'm actually surprised Daimler-Chrysler licensing released the footage of the Dodge Charger commercial for the DVD.

All in all, I think this DVD looks like a great package. I feel sorry for all the guys selling the crappy bootleg DVDs of old, washed-out TV prints on Ebay though...
