I love this movie and just got done reading Unekis' novel spoilers*
On wiki it says that they changed the script from them running into a diesel truck to a train. In Unekis's book, which I just got done reading, it was a lightpole they hit. From the book:
"He overcontrolled. Instead of a drift the car went into a wild slide, out of control. It slid around once, glanced from a taxi, then went head-on into a uitility pole."
There is also evidence that the novel had the police trying to lead them falsely into a trap which the wiki article says was the invention of the screenplay. The last line of the novel is:
"At the Post, Franklin leaned against the radio and said softly 'It's something called the Saftest Optimum Assumption. We MADE them race you for that hole.'"
meaning their escape. WIKI is wrong. Sorry but I love this novel. It's great. Kind of like one of those Parker novels Westlake did.
"I've seen things in this city that make Dante's Inferno read like Winnie The Pooh."
