Dersu Uzala == Yoda from Star Wars
What do you think?

reply

Since George Lucas's "Star Wars" was 1977 he could have borrowed it, and it wouldn't have been the only thing he borrowed from Kurosawa. But I always thought of this film as the closest the Soviets could come to something like "Little Big Man." At least before glasnost.

Yoda appears for the first time in Star Wars Episode V (1980), so George Lucas had 5 years to see Dersu Uzala (very likely, since Derzu won the Oscars in 1975).

reply

especially since george lucas helped release and fund Kagemusha with francis coppola in 1980.

reply

The old grandfather from the seven samurai reminds me of Yoda.

reply

I think Dersu words are similar that The Force concept.

reply

I had the same feeling watching this.

reply

I admit I also came up with the Dersu-inspired Yoda watching this film, especially after remembering Lucas's admiration of Kurosawa.

reply

I hadn't thought of it while watching the film but I do think you have a point. I was more struck by the similarities between Kurosawa's "The Hidden Fortress" and "Star Wars". There's no question Lucas drew a lot of inspiration from Kurosawa's films.

reply

LUcas accepts that

reply

Great board - I love that people are acknowledging the clear links between Kurosawa and Lucas's Star Wars films - the screen wipes, editing etc. Kurosawa has to be my favourite director of all time.

reply

I definitely thought while watching this film that Yoda was inspired by Dersu.

reply

That's a very reasonable theory, in my opinion.

Also during the first half hour of the film or so, there is that shot of the Captain with Dersu watching the sunset and the moon. It looks just like Luke watching the 2 suns go down in Tatooine.
