I can definitely see the influence of Carnival of Lost Souls in this, the eerie atmosphere, the ghoulish looking people with their creepy stares etc. Dare I say, the film wouldn't be half as good as it is without this unforgettable scene?

shareIt is a great scene and probably influences another of my favorites: Anguish.
Anguish takes it to a whole other level, but the vulnerability of a movie theater was shown much earlier in Messiah of Evil.

This scene reminded of the scene in Hitchcock's The Birds where Tippi Hedren is waiting in the schoolyard and the crows begin assembling on the monkey bars behind her. She notices one crow flying overhead and then landing, and when she looks around the playset is entirely covered with birds.

I love that scene! The grocery store scene is great too, even if the chase should have been a bit longer.
