Boring movie with a very good ending

I feel this had the potential to be a great movie but missed badly.

The idea is good and the ending is excellent but to watch this movie - 95% of it is not enjoyable and boring, but then the ending gives the snooze fest some validity. Luckily Coppola didn't miss on many others

It's a shame you didn't like it.

But I can certainly see why some people wouldn't. It's not kinetically 'exciting' in any way, and it is rather slow. That said, I find the film hypnotic and utterly riveting, and no matter how many times is see it, there is always more to be found.

I hope some day you can see it again - remembering that after you have seen a film for the first time that experience can never be repeated - and gain a bit more respect for it.

I've only seen it once but I had the same reaction. Exciting ending but the rest of the movie was just too damn slow and boring. Couldn't figure out where the story was going. Perhaps it will be better on a second viewing. I do think Hackman did a good job as always and I like the music, so at least it has those redeeming qualities.

The party scene makes the wedding scene in Deer Hunter seem snappy by comparison. Good beginning and end . . . PONDEROUS middle.

I actually found the entire movie quite riveting. It is one of my favorite movies.

Perfect description. The movie dragged on, but the ending was clever. Sadly it wasn't enough to make the movie one that could be rewatched.

if anything the ending was a slight letdown, the rest of the movie was great though

I appreciated the film but it was hard work with such an unappealing protagonist and long, drawn-out scenes that has little to do with the central plot. Maybe it would work better as a short film.

Having just watched this film for the first time I agree with these sentiments. It is an appealing premise, nice unique score that fits well with the tone, good acting from Hackman, but drags an awful lot. I was interested to know how it all ended in regards to the couple, as it obviously plants the idea that they're in some sort of danger, and that kept me sticking it out until the end. I was glad I did as it was a very well done ending that actually elevated the film for me.

Not something I'd be quick to rewatch but there were things in it, including the ending, that saved it.
