I'm doing my Doctoral Dissertation on Blazing Saddles at College of Santa Fe and wish to probe everyone's thoughts on this film. Isn't Lilli Von Stup really an 1890's version of the Red Queen in The Manchurian Candidate who eventually morphs into Shakespeare's brooding and frightened Calpurnia? And isn't Bart modeled as a prequel to Nathan Detroit? And isn't the citizens' ambivalence about remaining in Rrrock Rrridge to fight for their town a reflection of modern angst regarding the general loss of pride of birthplace in an increasingly homoginized 21st century western society?
Hedy Lamarr actually sued Mel Brooks for sullying her name, and settled out of court. Brooks thought it was worth it. She should have paid HIM for the publicity...
Brooks is having what we call in Australia, a gigantic p!sstake at Hollywood, cheesy Westerns, racial discrimination, racial stereotypes, national stereotypes, twisted versions of the wild west, homophobia, homosexuality, farting in public being disgraceful, Jewish humour, societal holier than thou attitudes, you name it it's all in there.
I have my PhD in Blazing Saddles. Some of the responses here are authentic frontier gibberish. I shall speak, and quote, from the books of Mathew, Mark, Luke, and Duck. My current license plate is WACO KID (really).
The deeper meaning. At its core, Blazing Saddles is a lampoon of prejudice. Plain and simple. It shows the stupidity of prejudice. All of the actors in their prime, right down to Cleavon Little's Gucci saddle. The movie not only lampoons prejudice, but lampoons the old west and the cowboys of the day.
Remember, the Sheriff is near.
Also, at your graduation, you have to say, "Pardon me, while I whip this out.
p.s. On the serious side, if you're really doing your dissertation, explore why Richard Pryor couldn't play Black Bart, but was allowed to contribute as a writer....the true meaning at the heart of the movie.
