where does the title come from???

I was wondering the referance of the meaning of the title??? Thanks

Mrprovolone, I think the meaning of the title can be taken two ways. Most simply, it's about a woman's attempt to relocate from New Mexico to California. But I prefer to see the title as representating a single mother's search for identity and stability while struggling with an obnoxious son, domineering men and a difficult job.

Any other theories?

Actually I think the family lived in Chicago, when the husband got killed in an accident on the freeway. I think he drove a Pepsi delivery truck. She was moving to California when the car broke down and she was stuck in, what I thought was, Phoenix. (I only saw this movie once and that was in 1974 in a movie theater.)

So "Alice doesn't live here (Chicago) anymore" and the second sentence of what you said.

The screen titling clearly stated that they were living in Socorro, in New Mexico, at the start. The dreadful child also references this when he says, on leaving the State, that everything about New Mexico is sh*t.

Quite why a trip to Phoenix - a 7 hour's drive, 377 miles - should be considered such a "road trip" even in 1974 is beyond me. Driving the equivalent distance in 1974 (from Kent to Carlisle) I certainly didn't feel I was undertaking a huge journey. Easily done in a day, even back then. If you were trying to drive to Monterey from Socorro - even if you went via Phoenix rather than Flagstaff - you certainly wouldn't go by way of Tucson. It's completely the wrong direction, not to mention backtracking.

Just stupid. Like the rest of the film. A waste of time and celluloid.

Say no more. You should go back to reading your AAA TripTik.
