Why do Alice and her husband cry?

IN a scene towards the beginning, alice and her husband begin crying while laying in bed. Why are they crying? Was there an explicit reason? What is the implicit reason?

She is crying because her husband doesn't notice her and treats their son badly. I guess he's crying because he probably feels somewhere deep down inside that he can be a better person, but he lack the intellect and the intellegence to confront his emotions in a mature fashion. I also think the fact that the husband is crying is supposed to give him some element of humanity before killing him off. It's like Scorsese is telling the viewers: somewhere behind the tough, remote reflection of a grown-up man lies a scared little kid who has problems communicating with his wife.
