I only got she was a girl when they were in the police station and at first I thought the boy was pretending to be a girl! I know, I was hitting the OG pipe, so maybe I just thought he had made friends with a boy at school! lol

Nah..not that sort of looseness about being GAY just did NOT exist back then! It was deeply hidden by Hollywood. It was long after Rock Hudson's career was over for him to even think about coming out. Actors who never got married were called lifelong Bachelors and no one considered them as being GAY.
So Jodie was just being motherly towards him not sexual.
These two kids were precocious in the movie as well as in real life. She went on to graduate from Yale before returning to her brilliant acting career. He went on to graduate from Stanford before co-founding his own successful software company.
