Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974)

This movie is superb, I can honestly say it is in my top ten films of all time.

I was born a few years after this film came out, and I never saw it until just tonight. The title sounded familiar and I saw it had gotten high ratings on the IMDb, but I knew nothing about it. Though some parts seemed slow to me (as one might say is to be expected from the MTV generation of which I am a part), I was really blown away by the lead's range of emotions. I'd like to see her in a different sort of role to see what else she can do. Any suggestions for a good rental?

Check her out in "Requiem for a dream", she is absolutely brilliant in it. Also see "The Exorcist" and "Playing by heart".

Check out 'Resurrection'. I like the entire movie, but the ending is really wonderful. I also enjoyed 'Same Time Next Year'.

She's got a smaller but significant role in "The Last Picture Show" which is one of my favorite movies of all times. It's based on a book by Larry McMurtry and stars a young Cybil Shepard and Jeff (?) Bridges. You probably could percieve it as 'slow' also, but it's touching and funny if you like small towners. Oh, right, and lots of full frontal nudity even...Randy Quaid...

Another one she was good in ... I am almost embarassed to suggest it since it's like the ULTIMATE chick flick ... "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood" where she plays the screwed up mother of Sandra Bullock... the movie actually has some great moments but some ultra-contrived ones as well.

Try Walking Across Egypt with Ellen Burnstyn and Jonathan Taylor Thomas, made in 1999,I believe.

I'm a huge Ellen Burstyn fan.In 1978, she made two completely different types of film - the romantic comedy "Same Time, Next Year" and a small, intense drama called "A Dream of Passion" co-starring Melina Mercouri. Mercouri plays an actress researching the role of Medea when she hears of an Army officer's wife who murders her children as revenge against her adulterous husband. Mercouri befriends Burstyn in jail and starts to get inside the mind of the tortured woman. The final scene of Mercouri emoting as Medea is played against Burstyn killing her kids - absolutely shattering!!! The subject matter is grim and Mercouri does go over the top a few times, but Burstyn is jaw-dropping brilliant. I believe the movie was released on VHS in the 80's and played a few times on cable, but it's pretty much a lost film. It was directed by Jules Dassin (Mercouri's husband) and was a French/Italian production. Look for it as you scan cable listings - it's worth checking out.

I don't get it. You're only a fan of hers when she's huge? Why?!
