Any thoughts of the surreal homage to Wizard of Oz at the beginning

I believe that it was a foreshadowing metaphor for what Alice will experience later in her life. There are similaritites between Dorothy and Alice being that they both travel on a long and lonesome road with someone they love that eventually will lead them back to a place where they once were happy.

Good observation.

Interesting to note that 16 years later, Diane Ladd (and daughter Laura Dern!) both starred in ANOTHER film full of Oz shoutouts: David Lynch's "Wild At Heart".

I'm watching this movie for the very first time on the TCM Channel right now . I really liked the beginning of this movie and was thinking the same thing about it being like a theme from " The Wizard of OZ " . The only song missing from this movie IMPO was - " Goodbye Yellow Brick Road " by Elton John . That would have been just right like his other song " Daniel " that was played in this movie . Thanks le-fantome for your subject post .
