So, Alice and her kid are driving west from New Mexico on their way to California. Why do they stop in Phoenix first, and THEN move on to Tucson? Tucson is east of Phoenix.
If she was running out of money, wouldn't it make sense to stop in Tucson first? And then move on to Phoenix? And if she bypassed Tucson the first time and went straight to Phoenix, why would she backtrack to Tucson instead of plowing ahead and trying to get closer to California?
Correct, Tucson is 105 miles southeast of Phoenix. Plus if you're originating from Socorro, NM and use I-10, you're going way out of the way. As a Phoenix native, I can see that some scenes were filmed there in an industrial area. A time capsule in a ways as the landscape today is almost unrecognizable.
Regardless of how they got to Phoenix, once there they would have continued straight west on I-10, through Los Angeles to Monterey. If they were so determined to get to Monterey to begin building a life there, it would have made zero sense to backtrack southeast to Tucson, farther away from their stated goal. Tucson is only two hours from Phoenix, but there are big-enough towns west of Phoenix if the idea is to work to earn eating-money along the way, step-by-step. Their itinerary didn't make sense.
The could not have been on US 60 based on the visuals. Immediately after leaving Socorro, NM they were on divided highway. They would have to be on I-25 south to I-10, or north to I-40. The most logical route, shorter and faster, would be to go north to Albuquerque and then west on I-40 to Barstow, and then continue on CA 58 through the Tehachapi Pass and into Bakersfield. Besides being shorter and faster, they would also pass through more small and medium cities.
I was born and raised in Phoenix. I joined the air force in 1974 and watched this movie in Monterey, CA while attending the Defense Language Institute in 1975. I drove the route from Phoenix to Monterey (and back) several times along various routes.
I think that the screen writers and/or director lost track of things while they were scouting locations. Some of the scenes were shot about forty miles south of Tucson in Amago, AZ.
I am still enjoying TCM's travelogue through Arizona. Now, I'm looking at what is supposed to be the Petrified Forest, but it is clearly a sound stage in Hollywood.

I lived for many years in both Phoenix and Tucson (although you don't have to be an Arizonan to read a map), and you're right about the odd routing they took (entering Tucson on a surface street, for one, rather than via I-10). My point was that, once AT Phoenix, you don't progress west toward their stated Shangrila of Monterey by diverting southeast to Tucson. What route they took to arrive at Phoenix is beside the point (mine, anyway).
Guessing Alice didn't get high marks in geography! Maybe if this were today, she could have at least used GPS and actually headed more in the general direction of Monterrey!
I would think the logical thing to do would be to head up to Albuquerque, and take Interstate 40. She could have stopped at Gallup, Flagstaff, Kingman, etc. heading west, and then head over towards Bakersfield, then on up to Monterrey.
