Coca-Cola's worst product placement in any film, ever....

Coca-Cola is one of those products that has long been fond of promoting product placement in films. In this film, the mean abusive husband is a driver for Coke- and then he dies in a (bloody) accident while driving the Coca-Cola delivery truck. Anyone know if Coca-Cola corporatation had anything to do with this? My guess is -if they knew how one of their employees would be portrayed negatively, then die a grisly death -they wouldn't have allowed it.

I was thinking the same thing. It's like McDonalds sponsering "Supersize Me".

I noticed this as well. Another strange thing: Didn't Coke have partial ownership of Universal at this time? Why would they promote their product in a Warner Bros. movie?

Not nearly as bad as in Superman II when Supe throws the bad guy into a Coca Cola billboard!

Why would they promote [Coke] in a Warner Bros. movie?

Because Coke drinkers (and any other potential customers) go to movies made by lots of other studios and indies, too. Hard to find many movies set in modern times where there ISN'T a Coke sign, bottle or machine somewhere along the line, no matter who made it. (Unless competing brand paid higher placement fee.) Coke references have appeared in many movies involving crime and murder without apparent detriment to product.

As for unfortunate death of abusive husband in fatal Coke truck accident, at least posts suggest people still vividly remember the brand involved. Is there a movie-goer alive who quit drinking the stuff because that was the brand of pop this less-than-admirable character was delivering when he died?

Later in film, Alice and Tommy have playful "food" fight with contents of Coke cups in their motel room, and Tommy is even seen making a big mess by blowing bubbles in a Coke in the diner.

Not like anyone died from drinking that particular beverage--now THAT would be bad product placement.

The husband was depressed and uncommunicative, but not abusive.

The worst Coke placement was in "Angels in America," when a Coke machine is located in the middle of the Antarctic. Supposed to be a joke, but was really obnoxious.

These days, you can't have any product appear in a movie unless you get a pile of legal documents signed by the company who makes that product.

But, maybe in the early 1970's and before, people mentioned products without that. Perhaps someone who knows more about the legal end of things could chime in.

I remember "Moonraker" having endless obnoxious product placements throughout. So, those companies paid to play. But, when it comes to filmmakers using products on their own, I don't know if they had to jump through the legal hoops back then.
