Burstyn's Oscar deserved: so many levels. Ebert says:

that Burstyn seemed more 'real' than in her previous films. She seemed to give her truest performance to date. And it's not easy being funny, which she was. I saw this in 74', and her moments of comedy stayed with me for days. And just that spontaneous scream she gives on the phone learning of Don's death. Seems like an under-appreciated performance by posters.

I agree. One of my all time favorite performances (come to think of it, I can't think of one performance in this movie that wasn't really good and believable, except maybe the lady who played Ben Eberhard's terrified wife, but that would be the only one) and one of my all time favorite movies. Definitely my favorite thing that Scorsese has ever done. Though I really do like "Mean Streets" a lot.

I wonder why Ellen didn't get any of the major critics awards for her "Alice.

"It's just Mel. Ruby's been dead for ten years, the place killed her. It'll probably kill me, too. "

"Goodness, Wanda Fay! Use a fan!"

"Hiya, Hyatt!"
"Oh, please."
"Yeah , I guess a lot of fellas pull that one on you. "
"Yeah, but most of them are under 12."

In addition to Burstyn ' s well deserved Oscar, this movie really should have gotten an Oscar for best original scrernplay. The dialogue is TOTALLY natural and funny. Nothing forced at all.

"The Bride... Screamed... Murder." HAHAHA!!!

I agree. I'm not a big Burstyn fan, but this was a great performance.
