Does Vera do anything useful?

I'm not sure why Mel keeps Vera around. Is she his niece or something? She kept switching everybody's plates around, not knowing who gets what, didn't know where the tea was, and went into total meltdown when she was waiting tables by herself!

I thought exactly the same thing, about how Vera must be Mel's niece. I don't know what work she might be cut out for, but it wouldn't be as a waitress in a high-stress, high-volume, fast-paced breakfast/lunch joint. Not a credible character, as performed.

Vera is one of those characters you feel sorry for and you keep around because they are loyal. Whether she was useful or not, you couldn't fire her. She was a body more than anything.

I would keep her their washing dishes, cleaning bathrooms, and filling straw and condiment containers when needed. Let Flo and Alice do the waitressing work.

I'm so glad Beth Howland changed the character for the better on the TV show. Vera was 98% useless in the movie.

She barely said two words in the movie. It was very odd.

I listed to the movie audio commentary. Apparently Ellen Burstyn and others thought the actor Valerie Curtin was a major comedic hoot. Maybe Curtin is one of those who comes across better and funnier in person? She sure as hell didn't do much on the Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore movie screen. Way too subtle and quiet compared to others around her.
