I'm not sure why Mel keeps Vera around. Is she his niece or something? She kept switching everybody's plates around, not knowing who gets what, didn't know where the tea was, and went into total meltdown when she was waiting tables by herself!
shareI thought exactly the same thing, about how Vera must be Mel's niece. I don't know what work she might be cut out for, but it wouldn't be as a waitress in a high-stress, high-volume, fast-paced breakfast/lunch joint. Not a credible character, as performed.
shareVera is one of those characters you feel sorry for and you keep around because they are loyal. Whether she was useful or not, you couldn't fire her. She was a body more than anything.
shareI would keep her their washing dishes, cleaning bathrooms, and filling straw and condiment containers when needed. Let Flo and Alice do the waitressing work.
shareI'm so glad Beth Howland changed the character for the better on the TV show. Vera was 98% useless in the movie.
