Why did they stop in AZ and other logic/continuity issues

If their goal was to go to Monterey why didn't they just go straight there rather than stopping in AZ, where she buys those expensive clothes and hotels to get a job to get to Monterey? Couldn't she have used the money for gas and gotten there in a day or two?

Other issue is they should have completely cut out the beginning of her at age 8, since it really had nothing whatsoever to do with the rest of the film.

But in general a great film; Burstyn got a well deserved Oscar back when that meant something. And loved the humor and that crazy kid. Any other thoughts?

For who would bear the whips and scorns of Hollywood... (;-p)
