The Angry Heart

I feel like this episode had messed up thinking. The boy's father abused him when he was six and then got killed. Charles looks at him like he's evil just because he said he's glad his dad died. Can you blame him? His dad abused him! And then at the end to have him say he loved him and is sad he died? Why?! We aren't shown any good traits of his father so it's hard to sympathize.

My old man beat me sometimes, and in retrospect I think he was just using me as a punching bag to work out the frustrations of his life. But I also have good memories of him. It's possible to have mixed feelings about a flawed parent.

Right. I just wish they showed the good memories of his father in this episode to help us better understand. And I will say in response to your situation, don't feel like it's okay what your dad did to you. It doesn't matter how frustrating his life was. Life is frustrating to everyone. It's not right to take it out on your kids that had nothing to do with your problems.
