He probably smelled like a mix of tobacco, horse manure and sweat...I'm sure Caroline didn't smell good either.

Everyone probably stank back them.

But I think his family probably bathed less than others, since he wouldn't get a job and they never had money. How could they buy soap?

No 19th century historian here. But I’d venture to guess that store bought soap would have been a luxury item for better off families, and families such as the Ingalls would have made their own from lye, ash (or whatever the heck it is that you would make soap from).
