My wife and I both remember Kolchak once throwing his hat and it actually hitting the hat stand. He turned and looked startled. We re-watched all the episodes recently, never saw that. Is this in both our imaginations?

I can confirm you were not imagining it. I once met Darren McGavin and my father recognized him because he flipped the hat off his head into the luggage rack of the airplane we were on, EXACTLY the same way we does the coat rack. We mentioned this when we were talking to him and he told us it was actually unscripted. He just did it and was genuinely startled when it connected. I think they're using a different take of the opening on the DVD copies.
