Musician Fred Schneider, shortly after graduating college in Athens, Ga, wanted to try his hand at acting, so he moved to Los Angeles in an attempt to make his Hollywood dream come true.

Unfortunately, in early 1975, Schneider ended up working on the set of The Night Stalker, cleaning up props, mopping the set, etc; after a particularly hard day, Darren McGavin took out his frustrations on Schneider by calling him a "little fairy" during the filming of "Horror in the Heights"; Schneider, offended, hit McGavin in the face with his mop, and was fired as a result.

As he was escorted from the set, Schneider shouted at McGavin, "You're the *real* Roc Sha monster!", to which McGavin replied, "Oh yeah? Well, you're a....a....ROCK LOBSTER, so THERE!"

Unemployed, Schneider returned to Athens in 1976, and met up with some friends over dinner and drinks at a Chinese restaurant; after several drinks, Cindy Wilson, Ricky Wilson, Kate Pierson, Keith Strickland, and Schneider played an impromptu number, inspired by Darren McGavin's insult to Schneider - Rock Lobster - which became their first hit single when their first B-52's album was released in 1978.
