At the time (1979 I think) Kolchak was unseen since the original 1974/75 broadcast so it was exciting!!

Yep, that's when I first started watching them. At the time we only got three channels -- CBS, NBC, and PBS -- so any time anything really good came on, it was like finding treasure. And I was a total horror-kid, so Kolchak was perfect. I also watched The Avengers re-runs they used to show... and occasionally they'd put on horror movies, like The Devil's Rain or Willard. One night they showed Phantasm when it was still showing at the drive-in down the road.
TV was much better back in those days, showing lots of weird, obscure movies. Now it's all-night news-feeds and the only movies they show are mainstream things that are ten years old at the most. I love having stuff on DVD, but there was still something special about staying up 'til 2 a.m. because The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly was coming on.

To me there was no greater joy than discovering a scary movie late at night...by yourself.
When CBS revived the Night Stalker in 1979- they OFTEN paired it with another fright flick:
They had a heavy rotation of films: Frogs, the Dark Shadows movies , Ben , Willard, The Devil's Rain, Beyond the Door, The Giant Spider Invasion and many more!

I saw the original movie on its premiere and the show during its original (sadly short-lived) run on ABC. Then followed the reruns on CBS. I agree: I miss late-night movies on free TV too.
Annoying the world since 1960!
I saw the series during its first run but didn't get to see the original two movies until years later on the 4:30 Movie on Channel 7. Then I got to watch the series again on late night. Much to my mother's chagrin at staying up so late.
