Were Richie and his friends highschool kids the whole series?

The series went on for 10 years, I haven't seen it in a long time. But was it sort of like the Simpsons where the characters stay the same ages the whole entire series?

Joanie and Chachi suddenly were in the same grade and must've graduated off-screen while Jenny Piccolo was supposed to be the same age as Joanie, yet lingered around in high school for another year during the season Joanie and Chachi left for their spinoff.

Nah, they went to University of Wisconsin Milwaukee after Jefferson High, then graduated and joined the army. At least Richie and Ralph did, Potsie started working at Cunningham hardware and hasn't been seen since.

Maybe Potsie vanished because he "accidentally" fell into Howard's wood chipper just like his son Chuck did years before.
