I dislike the Carl episodes
Right now Antenna TV is showing the Carl episodes. I REALLY don't like the Carl episodes. Does anyone here like them?

shareSomebody on this board said he sounded like he was drunk when he spoke lol. I'm cool with the Carl episodes being that his character doesn't last very long.
I do not understand the point of Carl being on there in the first place. Why go to all the trouble to bring on a person just to get rid of him soon after?
shareMeh, it would've been different if the character had stuck around. Its better he was done away with and just altogether forgotten about.

He didn't have any chemistry with Ester Rolle so yea Carl was very pointless .
shareI don't like ANY of the episodes past the third season even though I always liked Moses Gunn...
I guess when Esther Rolle had decided not to come back for season 5 the Carl character was written in as a love interest leading to marriage where they have to move to Arizona for Carl's health. Then when Rolle decided to return for season 6 it is presumed that Carl had passed away from the cancer.
shareMoses Gunn was a great dramatic actor, comedy was not his forte!
shareMoses Gunn is great. It is the character of Carl I don't like. I like Moses Gunn in other stuff.
shareReally? I thought that he was funny when he was in The Jeffersons. Granted he was only on for one episode.
shareThe Carl episodes were awful. I mean the show had some dignity without him. And yes he did sound like a drunk, and looked rather shabby. They could have fixed her up with someone better.

In the first Carl episode: When Michael decided to become an atheist, he says to Florida, "Ma, if he 'so merciful', then how come we're still living in the ghetto?"
The thing is I would have thought Michael's response of God's lack of mercy would be "Ma, if he 'so merciful', than why would he let DAD be KILLED in a car accident?"
That's what he should have said! Norman Lear seemed to want to forget about the James character which was a shame.
shareI totally agree....I dont like the episodes or him. He was rude and not right for Florida and him being an athiest was the last straw for me. Was so glad when they got rid of him.
shareI think this was an attempt to have another father figure on the show, after John Amos was fired. However, it was obvious Carl and Florida had zero chemistry and weren't believable as a couple. When Esther Rolle returned in season six, she stipulated that Carl be written out of the show, never to be mentioned again. Florida uttered his name only once more, when she gave Michael that book from her and Carl as a present.
