Michael Crichton was a reactionary moron, and this movie is proof
There's a common thread in Crichton movies and stories; he was so anti-technology and and anti-science that he didn't care what he had to do to convince people to hate both. If he had to flat out self-contradictory nonsense, then he did.
Case in point: in both Jurassic Park and Westworld, the engineers and scientists are set up as so incredibly brilliant that their achievements are astounding. And yet the same geniuses are so stupid in terms of basic logic that they're practically mentally disabled.
For example, the engineers in Westworld are smart enough to create a close circuit system and even fail safe switch to monitor things and turn off the power in case the robots do anything dangerous, but aren't smart enough to just not use non-lethal weapons or not give a Goddamned rattlesnake fake fangs.
The engineers are smart enough to create robots that look, act and feel like the real thing but aren't smart enough to do the same with weapons.
Crichton strikes me as the kind of guy who, if he had written 2001: A Space Odyssey, would've had HAL malfunctioning because the aeronautics engineers used a wad of chewing gum in his circuitry.
