Humour in Westworld

One of the most effective things they do in this cult classic is the throwaway humour. This sets us up for the upcoming "horror" parts which intensify towards the end of the story. It works smoothly as we come off the "merry"almost circus-like barfight and then matters start warming up.When Brolin, for instance, says he's shot it becomes a type of sardonic humour as previous scenes dictated. But this time : boy,we have a vacation for you really does "kick-in"

Absolutely. The jolly nature of the movie is fantastic. You almost feel like you're there with them.

Their reactions to Brolin's shooting seemed very genuine, and it does become surprisingly intense affterwards. Very well done.

Such a brilliant film.

See you at the party, Richter!

reply

Brilliant is correct and I like 'the Jolly' reference:

one feels that one is there with them and that is where the humour begins and the horror ends...

Twenty-five years after I last saw this film I remembered the Brolin death scene like I just saw it yesterday. When I got to that scene tonight it was exactly as I remembered it. I don't normally think of him being a great actor but Brolin really nailed it.

I don't think it's meant to be at all humorous but the scene that always cracks me up is when Peter is fleeing from the Gunslinger and he stumbles across the mechanic fixing a buggy. That guy is the most negative, pessimistic character in a movie I've ever seen :D "You've got no chance. You won't escape. You won't evade him. He will get you. And he will kill you". Yeah, thanks for the encouraging words pal! And to top it all off he then gets killed by the Gunslinger as Peter rides away 😂

Most of the humor seems to occur in the control room: the technician ordering breakfast, another technician complaining about the laundry, and small things like that. They're easy to miss unless you're following the (sometimes background) dialogue, but can be quite funny for how out of place they are.
