Finally saw this/comments

Okay I know I am little late to the party...but after hearing this movie referenced everywhere, I finally watched it and...my thoughts...feel free to leave comments

First Robert Redford was hot...I feel like that just needs to be said...the Horse Whisperer did not prepare me for this

I think the whole relationship breaking up over politics seems like a dated concept.

JJ married Hubble's college GF???? How did this not cause friction between two bffs? After seeing the whole movie, I think its great that these two have the kind of friendship that weathers stuff like this.

UMM the scene where Hubble goes to see (can't remember his college gf's name) to basically ask how she would like to live in CA??? I mean she is with your friend now and you are in a relationship.

I actually think he loved her as much as she loved him, they just had different ways of showing it.

The dance they shared meant a lot to Katie but Hubble seems to not remember it.

I would have liked to see a wedding scene.

Hubble seems to come from a traditional family...yet we don't get to see his or Katie's family interact in the movie.

Hubble and Big (Sex and the City) in my opinion have nothing in common other than both being attractive.

I love how Katie has a chance to sleep with him
(not the unconcious scene) but the carpet one and completely takes it without wrestling over whether its a good idea.

Katie doesn't seem to have the friendships Hubble does. She is serious when she says he is her best friend.

I related more to the Hubble character than Katie. I get that she has convictions but the big picture is all her protesting didn't change the world one iota.

Katie's problem with Hubble's friends to me is less about their politics and more about her insecurities. She seems uncomfortable socializing even with that nerdy guy from college.

Best scene...definitely their dance...you can tell they both feel it.

Uggh leaving your wife okay, but who leaves their child...was joint custody not an option back then? This is really the only time I saw Hubble's character as weak. Okay the cheating, but that is more understandable than leaving your child.

JJ realizes losing Katie is a bigger loss than his wife. For all his ribbing he gets that she is someone special.

Katie when someone tells you look good, don't tell them that you ironed your hair. Just take the compliment.

Red long nails...not sure I am feeling it.

I read somewhere that Barbara Streisand is self concious about her nose, but I like it.

Quite good film except that I couldn't relate to it al, specially the lovestory, I don't understand why they could not live together and why he can't see his daughter. How can some political views hinder that, it seemed ridiculous. I quess this film hasn't aged well.

reply

Yeah, I can't really see this happening today at all. And even if they had to break up (which they didn't), why can't he still see his daughter? The memories are so painful he has to forget her too. I think that whole part was contrived so at the end they could run into each other. Because despite Hubble's issues he seems like a responsible person.

There's a number of reasons why he "can't see" his daughter and Katie gets it or don't you think she'd curse him out if she didn't? It has nothing to do with to do with him being callus it's more about him maintaining a veneer after this choice he made.

No, there are not a number of reasons. I think he is choosing not to see his daughter. Part of Katie and Hubbell's issues were that she refuses to see who he is and she instead chooses to see who he has the potential to be. He tells her the same thing in the movie. Hubbell is essentially a weak person and I believe he thinks its easier for him not to see his daughter. So in a sense, I understand his decision but at the same time I think its unconscionable. Now, he may delude himself into thinking its for his daughter's best interest but I think its mostly a selfish choice. As he says to Katie, "I was never a good gentile boy."

reply

I though the issue with the daughter was he remained the west coast and she was in the east coast.

I agree with her insecurities over Hubble's waspish friends. In reality at that time that would be difficult to overcome.

Its that man again!!

That actually makes sense. I didn't think of that.

I never understood how it all fit together until I saw some out takes on YouTube. I am not a critic but I don't think they edited it too well and wish we could see the director's cut.

I had to see it more than once to get all of the politics involved with it. I can understand why Hollywood liberals are still mad about about what happened back then but it looks like they are now guilty of the same blacklisting of conservatives as was done to them. Revenge hurts the one holding it more than it hurts to whomever they direct it. Like Robert Redford said about Hollywood as Hubble Gardner, money is what makes liberals and conservatives work together when they can both make money so both sides should move on.

reply

It is the director's cut, it's Pollack who chose to edit those scenes out of the movie because he thought it worked better without it, it's explained in the documentary. On the other hand, Streisand and Laurents wanted the scenes.

When I saw the out takes, it was clear there that she agreed to divorce him because he would be blacklisted if they stayed married. Of course, she was also angry for his sleeping with his ex girlfriend. She was ahead of her time in her boldness and that does not mean that I agree with her politics in the movie and what she proclaims today but it is a free country. However, I don't think she and her friends want freedom of speech for those who disagree with her. I have a lady friend with whom I have dinner on occasions and go to the movies together and we are compatible as long as we don't get too deep into politics or religion. There is not way I would marry her. Hubbell and Katie would be grandparents now but a sequel would be interesting.

I agree. Not sure about maintaining a veneer wasa the reason though.

I can relate more to Katie.
That nerdy guy in college was James Woods!
Hubble totally knew he screwed up when he saw her at the end, but hates himself, hates his own lack of character for not allowing himself to love her.
I think leaving a child in a broken marriage was common back then.

That s Mr. Baby to you!
