Nitpick on F. D. R. death

Why does the radio announcer say/imply that President Roosevelt died at 5:45 a.m.? The death certificate says 3:35 p.m.! http://docs.fdrlibrary.marist.edu/psf/box20/t901ay01.html I knew immediately it was wrong as Roosevelt was having his portrait painted when he collapsed, and died not too long afterwards. Who the hell has their portrait painted at 5:45 a.m.?

You'll have to hold a seance and channel either Arthur Laurents who wrote the novel, or the director, Sidney Pollack, and ask how they could have gotten such a fundamental piece of history wrong.

Without checking the movie again, I was hoping I heard it wrong but somehow I don't think I did.

reply

Well, I had just watched it (dvr) and came to the boards.... and said, "wow, that's a significant error" so I rewound to the scene. And yes, the scene was written incorrectly. I thought maybe it was a time zone thing... but he died on the east coast, AT the White House, and Katie and Hubbell were on the East Coast, IN NY! So, that's a major flub.

reply

No, actually he died in Warm Springs, Georgia, which may be a different time zone than New York and the White House, but not THAT different! That does remind me, though, when Walter Cronkite announced President Kennedy's death he did give the time in the different zones.

reply

time zone in georgia = same as ny -- and thank you for the correction. Yes -- Warm Springs, it was. I was so caught up in the time piece part of it I lost my footing on the facts.

Indeed, it was a silly mistake, and someone should have caught it... but... c'est la script!

So the scriptwriter / checker lost his/her footing on the facts, just like you. I'd think you would be more forgiving or understanding.

reply

EXCUSE ME? As a simple viewer, NOT writing the script, I didn't hold history in my hand. I was MERELY responding to a thread and admitted my error. The fact checker should have gotten it correct.

So, really????? I wasn't part of the process -- and in my history as a profession (in an entirely unrelated field) had I "lost my footing" on a detail such as that, I'd also have LOST MY JOB.

stfu.
