Even in the beginning of the movie when they were in college Redford and Streissand looked to be in their mid-late 30s however I got the feeling they were supposed to be early to mid 20s.

The film takes place over about a 20 year period -- from their days in college (late 30's Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939) through the beginning of the Cold War and anti-nuke period of the U.S.--early 50s.

They were late college age, mid 30s for the span of the picture.

During the Hollywood 10, Redford comes in and say their friends fighted and argue bescause she became 33. Streisand say aren't we all 33 and Redfort says, not you. And ask her, if she was 16 when they met first. This would mean, Redford was born 1915 (and is 21 at the start of the movie) and Streisand 1920.
