Fox DVD rip-off: the film is heavily censored!

The double feature release of TALES FROM THE CRYPT and VAULT OF HORROR is a mixed bag. CRYPT is intact and looks fantastic (although it has no trailer). VAULT's trailer is shown in B&W for some reason and the movie, itself, is a very poor presentation. Most of the more graphic moments have been trimmed out or replaced with still photos. Even something as tame as the vampire segment, where the vampires use a wine tap in the man's neck (the film's most iconic image) has had the actual shot replaced with a still from the footage. (And even that is censored. Pause the still, and you'll see the wine tap has been partially blacked out.)

Fox pulled the same stunt when they gave us the DVD of ONE MILLION YEARS BC, using a shorter version of the film than the laser disc or Region 2 DVD had.

Anybody heard a peep back from Fox yet? Cause I sure haven't. Of the five contacts I've e-mailed I've only heard back from the UK Fox contact who was very prompt and said she'd send my e-mail to the correct people. Still no word though!

I just received the following reply to an e-mail I sent to FOX Customer service:

Hello,

Vault of Horror (1973) was originally released as an R-Rated film but was later re-cut to get a PG rating. This re-cut version is the only version owned by 20th Century Fox. When developing the DVD, we did research information about an uncut print which was released theatrically but after several attempts, we were unsuccessful in securing a copy of that print. To satisfy the consumer demand for the title on DVD, we decided to move forward with the widescreen PG version we had in the vaults and included it with Tales from the Crypt (1972) as part of the Midnite Movies Double Feature series.

Thank You

Because as other posters have pointed out, the complete uncut and uncensored version IS available in the UK and elsewhere.

Plus, despite the fact that the package says it's the PG version, it nowhere lets the buyer in on the fact that it's an edited PG re-cut of an R-rated film.

Have you checked out fleshwoundvideo.com?They have a fully uncut widescreen version available.They are bootlegs but have bought of this guy before and the quality as always been excellent.

Thanks for the tip! This is what happens when Fox doesn't measure up I guess. So the print quality is good then? How does it measure up to the cut print that Fox put out?

I'm not sure as I havent ordered a copy yet but I have used fleshwound before and they have always been great.It would be nice to know if he has used pristine elements for the cut scenes and not just added the scenes from the Vipco UK DVD and zoomed in so that they are anamorphic like the region 1 DVD.

Check:

http://www.fleshwoundvideo.com/Vault_of_Horror.jpg

You could read at the bottom of the back cover image, "1 Hour 34 Minutes" (or something near...) More than 90 minutes!!! I have the recently edited Midnight Movies Double Feature, and that version of "Vault..." runs for 85 min. Is this Fleshwound version for real? Someone has to compare VIPCO (UK) and FLESHWOUND VIDEO versions to get light about.

Im sick of this "versions" c r a p. I have had to buy USA movies edited in UK and France because in USA or they are still not edited or they are edited incomplete. F ........ C K

DVD's is for home use, WTF. All DVD's would be uncut or with "theatrical and uncut" versions, fully restored, with captions and subtitles, full of extras.

Want the complete episodes of this USA TV series? Go buy it in Chile. Want the uncut version of this italian giallo gem? Go buy it Iceland. WTF

I was wondering about the stills they used in the movie. Well... hell, that sucks. But thanks for the info. I'll be on the lookout for the uncut version.

just watching it right now,
geez, what a disappointment;
I actually couldn't make out what the still in the wampire tale meant;
I had to read here that the blacked out part was a tap in the guy's neck;
why cut that out for crying out loud?;
people only watch horror movies to see the effects, so why cut those out, who are they to decide what we are supposed to see and what not.
You don't edit art, and movies are art.
Paintings are not censored either so why movies.
Land of the free my behind!
Shame on you Fox!
