Will a real DVD release ever happen?

Will there ever be a satisfactory version of this film released in the U.S.? Are there any future plans for this film or has it become a hopeless situation?
So many movies get multiple versions on DVD; I realize this isn't a film with a huge fan base, but it is deserving of a proper release.
Is this a lost cause? Has anyone heard any news that is remotely positive about the future of this film?

It's out in a disc edition with Tales from the Crypt.

I know about that release by Fox.
I should have explained myself clearer. I wanted to know if there is any news about an additional release of this film, which will hopefully be uncut. Right now, it looks like fans of this film will be stuck with a hacked up copy forever.

Yes, the release in September 2007 is cut. The blood draining scene in the first story is a freeze frame. Since it never even came out on VHS (that I know of) and has taken this long to come to DVD (and everything under the sun has come to DVD already) I doubt that we will see an uncut version anytime soon.

I would really like to see Anchor Bay get their hands on it, do an uncut release, and possibly have a commentary from any remaining members of the cast or crew.

I'm not 100% certain, but I believe the UK/Region 2 release is uncut. I'd have to check it again but I don't recall it having any cuts to it...

I have the Vipco (now out of business) dvd and it is indeed uncut. It's fullscreen, but very nicely framed and has excellent picture and sound. I am much happier with this version than the "Midnite Movies" hack job.

I have the Vipco release as well, but it would be nice to merge the sound and picture quality of the Fox DVD with an uncut print. The film Asylum had a wonderful treatment when it was released for a second time on DVD. Perhaps Vault will get that someday.

I got it for a dollar at WalMart, in a double feature with "Frightmare."

But is that one uncut, and how is the pic quality?

reply

Not sure which one you mean but both the Vipco and the Fleshwound are uncut. The Vipco is full frame and the Fleshwound is widescreen and anamorphic, though there is less information on the sides than there is with the Fox. The Vipco and the Fleshwound appear to have been taken from the same source - the Fleshwound is interlaced NTSC but the Vipco picture looks very much like an NTSC-to-PAL conversion and has been de-interlaced. The Fleshwound is definitely better (colour) but not spectacularly so.

The thing to do is get the Fleshwound; get the Fox (for the picture quality and of course the perfect "Tales From The Crypt"!) and get some useful computer software.

Actually I meant the other one, lol. The double feature with "Frightmare."

Picture quality is great. Not certain if it is uncut or not, as it is the only version I have seen.

Well if in the vampire story the guy upside down at the end is a still frame, instead of moving in a certain way, it's cut.
Is it widescreen, and if so, anamorphic?

reply

Pardon the thread resurrection, but just for future reference: The "Frightmare/Vault of Horror" bundle is *not* uncut. It features the exact same PG still frame censor nonsense as the Midnite Movies release.

I am so happy to say that 6 years after writing that comment, it finally looks like an uncut release of this film will be coming on Blu Ray. It only took 41 years for this film to have a proper release in the U.S. My order is already in. Great news!

reply

And not to mention that this release also includes 'Tales From the Crypt' as well.

Final Cut Entertainment released an uncut DVD a few years back and in widescreen!
