The silent clips during the credits

Does anyone know if the clips they show at the beginning are from actual silent Shakespeare adaptations or were they made up for the movie?

I'd enjoy knowing the same answer, and am thinking of trying to find earlier versions of "The Merchant of Venice" (among others).

They were definitely genuine silent versions. One of the actors in the Merchant of Venice clips looked like a very young Charles Laughton?
