John, Ringo or Buddy?
This movie, with a reference to Buddy Holly in its title, is supposed to be inspired by the early (Quarrymen) days of the Beatles with David Essex in an Lennon-like role, fond of knocking up snatches of punning juvenile verse. John himself is not here but there is a meaty little role for Ringo in it. Also in That'll be the Day, basically playing themselves, musos (unlike Ringo) is Keith Moon & Rory Storm as lead man in a band not called The Hurricanes but something reminiscent. Essex's character is a school kid who overdoes it swotting on history for his 'A' Levels for uni entrance & complaining about "Jenkins' Ear disease" chucks it all in the hope of becoming a rock star - but only ever seems to get as far as playing the mouth organ to himself in his bedsit. David Essex & especially Robert Lindsay are both ridiculously young-looking in this film.
