The Sting (1973) vs Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)
which is better??
shareButch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
shareThe Sting aged better.
shareNot seen either for a while but I used to prefer Butch and Sundance. Never liked Redford's character in the sting plus I also liked the whole dynamic around Katharine Ross.
shareI have a weird answer, both are great movies.
For a first time viewing, I think The Sting is a stronger movie.
For repeat viewing, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
I have seen both movies numerous times, the nature of The Sting, with it's suprise ending and twists makes it less fun to watch after you know the ending.
Butch, because you know of their demise, makes it more fun.
"For repeat viewing, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid."
This is true. I mean you can enjoy "The Sting" over repeat viewings, but they have to be widely spaced - like decades apart. Because it's an absolutely great movie on first viewing, but the fun is hugely bound up with a surprise ending, and that can only happen once.
"Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" is a movie you can enjoy many times, at many stages of your life. It's a damn good movie, which offers everything I like in a movie - action, genuinely hilarious moments, depth, drama, gorgeous actors and hot men. It's also one of the few films that carries off both incredibly funny scenes and incredibly dark scenes, which agrees with my personal world view. I laugh and make jokes, because life is so hard that you just have to laugh or give up. So I guess "BCatSD" is not only a better film, for me it's a much more personal one.
Oooh. Tough one. I think that Butch Cassidy might be slightly better, but I think I enjoy watching the Sting more.
shareI'm thinking the cinematography tilts it toward Butch.
The setting is so much more entrancing and relaxing, all the green trees and fields.
A much better film to watch, plus I think The Sting has some jumpy editing choices that take away from it.
But I haven't seen The Sting in forever.
