Despite not being historically accurate (Scott Joplin's music had faded by the 30s), Hamlisch's ragtime notes go an extremely long way in making this movie memorable.

He deserves respect for The Sting alone.

I heard the sad news a short time ago. I have greatly enjoyed playign and listening to ragtime music thanks to his work in The Sting.

RIP Marvin Hamlisch :(

Yes, this is a shame. I remember buying the soundtrack to 'The Sting' as a teen (on vinyl, of course) and playing it repeatedly. I enjoyed reading Hamlisch's liner notes that paid great homage to Scott Joplin. He admitted that 'Solace' was his favorite Joplin piece. Rest in peace, Marvin!

He was a Great Talent--saw him in person when he did a guest Conductor of the local Symphony Pops Centers several years ago. I remember as a kid when he won all of those Oscars in one night and also of Gilda Radner's Lisa Loopner character on SNL having a Huge Crush on him! LOL

I don't get all this Hamlisch worship. He did virtually NOTHING for this film except take credit for composing music someone else wrote. (oh, and "adapting it." big deal. any music student could have done the same.)

You're absolutely right.

Thank you.

totally agree! and i don't get how he can win the oscar for someone else's music
