My favorites: Newman's incomparable 'Shaw' in the poker game. Can't imagine any other actor doing it as well. Just cracks me up every time. During the 'job interviews' for the race parlor - Curly Jackson's bit. "Me specialty's an Englishman." Such sparkle and humor - when Kid Twist laughs in response, you know it's a real reaction.
Everyone is terrific in the film but my favorite has to be Robert Shaw. I love the scene when he is talking to his henchmen while he is eating. He is tearing into that meal the way an animal would tear into its prey.
Charles Durning (Snyder) spilling the beer on Eileen Brennan's dainty little hand in the joy house.
Snyder slamming Kid's nose against the table after the wise crack--Durning in general was superb!
Elliot Gould: "Dukie, if this thing blows up, the feds will be the LEAST of our problems".
"Thanks for the evening, Hooker. The next time you want to spend 50 bucks on me, mail it!".
Robert Shaw (Lonigan): "Take a good look at that face, Floyd. Because if he ever found out that I could be beat by one lousy grifter, I'd have to kill him and everyone else who wants to muscle in on my Chicago operation. Ya follah?". Priceless!
He who conquers himself is mightier than he who conquers a city.
Robert Shaw was great! When he was eating he cuts the meet rhythmically 3 times then points at the envelope with Hooker's money in it.
FBI Agent Polk: "Why don't you sit down and shut up will you? Try not to live up to all my expectations."
Snyder: "What a shame. Then you'd have to move out of this nice office you have set up here."
Snyder: "Relax, Erie, I'll bill ya!"
Also the banker, right in the middle of servicing a customer at the teller window gets the signal from Gondorff and just grabs his hat, hands his boss a forwarding address for his salary (I assume), and walks out with a sheepish grin.
The casting was superb, the dialog, the acting . . . everything. What a movie.
my favorite performance too with Newman as shaw in the poker game for it is a classic and for redford was when he met newman's character the first time
Robert Redford's performance in The Sting will always be one of my all-time favorites. I keep a list of performances I feel are inspired and Redford's is in my top 10 in that list.
