Though the Sting is very good, it is not timeless like Butch + Sundance is. Once you know the twist there is not much else to it. There is no twist in Butch + Sundance, and the ending gets me everytime. Its such a powerful ending. It is truly timeless.
although having said that, one of the small niggles with The Sting is its claustrophobic feel. There are not many outdoor shots, and you just know it was filmed on a studio lot. Whereas B&S had many panoramic. broad shots and just felt more natural to me.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, definitely. The Sting had a good story, but I never really liked GRH's directing job in it, even if he won the Best Director award.
I like The Sting a little bit more. There seems to be a little bit more flow to The Sting. You sort of have to pay attention to The Sting a little bit more. As much as I love the chase scene in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, it is sort of slow at times.
For the record - both movies are absolute classics and if either one is on the tube - I'm watching it. What's been great is that the cable companies have been playing both late nights on the weekends. I wish I could go back and watch these films for the first time again - especially The Sting cause of the ending.
I wish they still made movies like these. Studio's and directors are so hell-bent on special effects these days, the storyline's get thrown out the window. The special effects these days are so "special" they seem incredibly fake - anyone else notice that?
The thing I like is how the Newman & Redford's relationships in the films are so different.
In The Sting, they are mentor and student. Also, it's really Redford's movie. He's the main character and the plot revolves around him. Outside the poker game, I don't think Newman has a speaking role in any scene without Redford.
In Butch Cassidy, they're partners and friends. It's really about their different temperments and it's more dialog driven. It's much more equal, although if you had to pick, Newman would be the main character who drives the plot.
today is the longest day of my life season 1 of 24
if I had to choose between the two I would choose the sting (in fact I am watching it right now) and love it just as I did when I first saw it. it is also a movie I would recomenned anyone seeing if they haven't seen it yet
Prefer THE STING (handsomer Redford, more satisfying emotional content) but believe BUTCH is recognized as the greater artistic achievement. BUTCH also has far more quotable dialog.
The total TONNAGE of what you don't know...
I didn't know you were the Sundance Kid when I said you were lying
Think you used enough dynamite there, Butch?
